In some research I’ve done recently, or I should say “in some research that has been done on me” I have learned a great deal about how the brain works and how powerful it is when you aren’t even paying attention. It never really shuts off, and when you are focused on something for a period of time, some parts of your brain that you don’t even know about can become hyper-focused.
The real reason you should be careful with timing tells먹튀폴리스사이트 online? Your opponents may not even know they are using them!
There are all sorts of implications to this, more than I can go into in any one article, and in fact I’m considering writing my next book on the subject because I’ve learned so much from it. To narrow the focus down a little bit, I decided to stick with the effect this newfound knowledge (new to me anyway and fairly cutting edge in the scientific world too I suspect) has on tells. Physical tells, as well as the timing and betting pattern tells that can be found online.
When Doyle Brunson says “Trust your first instinct when you are reading a guy” part of what makes it correct is the effect of subconscious processing. I have seen the proof that this kind of knowledge fades quickly after about four seconds, and that it works incredibly well if you learn to listen to it. In blind tests it is easily proven that things people don’t know they have seen or heard can have a big effect on their behavior.
What does this mean in terms of looking for tells?
The first thing that we know is that you should keep watching your opponents, even if you feel you aren’t seeing anything useful and it feels like a waste of time. You will discover eventually that it has a big effect on your win rate and you start to notice things you have never noticed before. It takes time, but be patient and continue to watch and try to stay focused.
Another important thing to pay attention to is how you listen to those pieces of information your subconscious mind is telling you. If you get an immediate sense that you should make a play that is not what you would typically do, stop and think about why your brain might be telling you to do it. If there’s no good reason, then you shouldn’t always listen, but if there might be something there then by all means follow it and see where it leads. After a few weeks you may find that you can tell what it feels like when your brain sends you a telegram with important information in it.
Believe me, I know some of this stuff sounds a little bit odd. I’m Mr. Logical and Skeptical (not my real name) and I doubt everything that isn’t easily proven, but it’s not tough to prove these things, and I know they work.
The most important lesson I got from these experiments was about my own tells. I don’t know what they are, though I know I have some timing tendencies online that I’ve been trying to get rid of, but my opponents may be reading them better than I ever thought they could. In fact the people I think are such fish (and in most cases they are) may be better at reading my tells than I am at reading them.
Most fish have never learned the math, the odds, the correct plays, or the logic behind making the determinations that make you a winner. But they do study the table and they hope they are right and they stay very focused on that little piece of their world that is the digital poker table. And if you have a timing tell or a betting pattern that is too predictable, they will remember it. They won’t know they remember it, but they will get the telegram.
And what does a fish do with that telegram? They listen. Much more closely than you or I, they listen and they follow the instructions. Because it’s hard sometimes to tell those instructions from whim, you or I have learned to ignore that whole line of communication, but the fish have been listening to it since the first time they played the game. It usually gives them bad advice based on their desires rather than good information, but they are listening either way.
You want them listening to that voice in their head that says “have fun, do what you like, call every bet.”. You don’t want that voice also mixing in “Fox has the nuts, he always pauses for 9 seconds before he bets with the nuts” because it will hurt your win rate. So…
Fix those tells, randomize your play, and don’t be consistent with your behavior. Make it a point to mix it up and give your opponents nothing to read whether you are online or in a live game. Be watchful and still, like a hunting fox.
